    Marriage Restoration

    Every Monday evening

    6 p.m. - 8 p.m. @ The United Way Center,

536 N. Jackson Street, Jackson, MI.

*Workshop registrants attend at no cost.

Most couples going through rough spots only see two options; painful marriage or divorce.  There is a third option: an ongoing weekly program to restore and build better marriages.  The Marriage Restoration Workshop offers hope for hurting couples, and covers critical topics, such as how to fight fair, forgiveness and repair, understanding expectations, control issues and much more.

Many couples needing a "turn-around" in their marriage find hope and answers participating in these weekly forums. Attend as-needed to gain support from other couples while learning tools to help rebuild your relationship.

Whether you’ve just started dating each other or you’re considering marriage sometime soon,

    Adventures in Dating

is an ideal night out for the two of you. Each relationship is different, but there are common issues most couples face. And there are proven ways to make relationships get even better
    and stronger with time.

The evening starts with couples picking their own excursion*: a pontoon ride around the lake, or yard games near the water.

Then, after some couple time, you will enjoy a delicious dinner, provided by Phil Tripp, and you'll settle into a comfortable evening led by Shelby Raines.  Don’t worry-- you don’t have to “share,” you just have to relax, enjoy the lake and the laughter-filled learning. Oh and save some room for s’mores at the close of the night, thanks to Lowe's of Jackson!

    Facilitator: Shelby Raines

Shelby Raines is the Executive Director of Marriage Matters Jackson and a big fan of having fun! You may have heard her co-hosting monthly on K105.3, or speaking at other community activities. In addition to her husband and family, she also enjoys traveling, playing games, photography, and reading a good book while lounging by the pool.  Shelby is an admitted pop culture trivia buff; she can quote TV and movie lines from the 60s to present day. She loves Jimmy Fallon, prefers short walks on the beach, the occasional pina colada and getting caught in the rain. She’s not much into health food or champagne but loves slipping lyrics to old songs into everyday life. ;) And prior to marriage, she enjoyed dating a lot. In fact, she still enjoys dating, she just limits it to her husband Drew.  But she knows dating and relationships can be complicated and we all want to get it right!  Shelby believes putting some work and effort into your relationship from the earliest stages helps tremendously in the long run. That’s why Shelby does what she does with Marriage Matters Jackson.

It is possible to cope with a special needs child and have your marriage thrive … really!  Author, psychologist and presenter Dr. Laura Marshak, is coming to Jackson to show you how. In her book Married with Special-Needs Children: A Couples Guide to Keeping Connected, Dr. Marshak provides a wealth of realistic suggestions for strengthening your relationship. It’s this wisdom, gained from her personal and professional experiences with hundreds of families, she’ll share at MMJ’s Marriage Pep Talk event.

Although a child’s disability does have a large impact on a marriage, Dr. Marshak offers hope and examples of how a child’s disabilities can amplify the good times in your relationship. After her presentation, and a short break, MMJ’s Shelby Raines will join Dr. Marshak on the stage for some Q&As submitted by the audience.  There will be real stories, real laughter and real learning you can enjoy together.

This session is an ideal for any couple raising a child with special needs from a to z, such as: attention and learning issues, mental or physical disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and many others. The diagnoses may differ greatly but the information at this MMJ Marriage Pep Talk is applicable to nearly every couple who is parenting a special needs child.

Laura E. Marshak, Ph.D. and her husband have raised three sons, including one with special needs. She is professor of counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is also founding partner and psychologist at North Hills Psychological Services, where she works with many parents of children with disabilities.
